What can you do to nurture the love of reading in kids? There is no simple answer, but if you can make books and reading fun, then you’re halfway there. Picture Books & More is this library’s attempt to lure nascent book lovers into the lifelong habit of reading for pleasure. Our recipe? Take 20-25 first and second graders (especially those who haven’t yet been bitten by the reading bug), add lavishly illustrated picture books on enticing subjects, mix with exciting art projects, and top with a surprise snack – sometimes slimy, always sweet.
Picture Books & More is the only multi-week after-school program we do, and it is a great way to help kids connect with books and the library. As librarians, it gives us a chance to get to know individual kids and make sure that they know that the library is a joyful, welcoming place. This is a formula that’s worked for over 10 years, and we intend to keep it going – look for it every spring and fall. Supporting Mill Valley’s next generation of readers is one of our library’s primary missions and it’s a mandate we take seriously…by adding a bit of fun.
