Reading is Delicious

Summer’s around the corner and we’re making plans to keep young Mill Valley readers engaged in the tasty art of reading. Studies have consistently shown that kids who read and visit the library during the summer actually minimize the reading lag that naturally occurs when returning to school in the fall. Besides, what’s not to love about eight weeks of free children’s events, including outdoor performances, story times, book clubs, classes, author visits, movies, and our legendary reading game?

Here are just a few of the highlights – click here to download a complete list of programs. Some programs have age restrictions and/or advance sign-up requirements.

On Mondays, we bring you Stories & More – sensational stories from around the world to whet your appetite for books and reading, and something extra: a craft project, a tasty treat, a guest storyteller, or a musical performance. Don’t miss Phil Sheridan’s favorite stories on July 1st or our Stuffed Animal Library Sleepover on August 12th!

Kids under five and their caregivers will love Little Sprouts on Tuesdays – special activities that help connect our youngest patrons with good times at the library. Sign up for Yoga Sprouts on July 16 or rock out with The Snail People in the amphitheater on August 6th.

Make a date with Wednesdays on Stage at 3:30 pm starting June 26th. The whole family will enjoy outstanding performances by children’s entertainers, storytellers, magicians, musicians, and more. Doug Hoskins, aka the Surfing Magician of Santa Cruz, is our first performer. Others include Crosspulse Rhythm Duo (July 10), storyteller Muriel Johnson (July 24), and the Magical Moonshine Puppet Theatre (August 7). All ages are invited to attend these special events in Old Mill Park’s gorgeous outdoor amphitheater. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Earth + Art Adventures happen on Thursdays and run the gamut from a hands-on tortilla making class (June 27) to an encounter with Mad Science (August 8) on the amphitheater stage. We’re proud to welcome Wildlife Associates and their Creepy Critters (snake, lizard, tortoise, and tarantula) on July 18th.

On Free Play Fridays we just kick back and have fun – drawing cartoons (June 28), making paper airplanes (July 12), or enjoying a shadow puppet show in the cool Creekside Room (July 19). You won’t want to miss our First Ever Lego Play Day on July 26th either.

Don’t forget about Sunday Specials! At 11:00 on June 16th, rock out with the incredibly hip Hipwaders at the Old Mill Park Amphitheater. Learn about the wonder and science of bubbles with Amazing Bubble Man Louis Pearl in the Library’s Main Reading Room on July 14th. Experience the outside-the-box sound of Parent’s Choice Award winners The Harmonica Pocket on August 25th.

Our Laugh Out Loud Book Club will keep young readers (entering grades 3-5) in stitches reading Dan Gutsman’s Genius Files and Pizza & Pages Book Club will provide some heavy thoughts and pizza slices for the middle school crowd.
