2013 Man Booker and National Book Award Nominees

bookawardIt’s award season, and now that the Emmys are over, we can safely turn off our tvs and get back to what really matters…the written word!  Several big-name literary awards have just announced their long and short lists of nominees, and with only 1 repeated title (The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri), this year’s lists provide a delicious and diverse sampling of literary talent.

We begin with the illustrious Man Booker Prize, given to the “best novel of the year” written by a member a citizen of the UK, the Commonwealth, or the Republic of Ireland. (Next year’s Man Booker will open up to US citizens, a decision which is causing a bit of a stir in the literary world.)

And then, we come to the 2013 National Book Awards long list.  The National Book Awards are awarded in several different categories: fiction, non-fiction, Young Adult, and Poetry. The purpose of the award is “to  celebrate the best of American literature, to expand its audience, and to enhance the cultural value of great writing in America.”
