Fact #97: In December 1930, Library staff checked the Mill Valley Telephone Directory for names of people who were not using the Library. Librarian Sybil Nye said "the next thing that could be done is to telephone those who appear not to be making use of us and suggest they visit the Library in the near future." There is no report this plan was carried out.

Fact #98: As early as 1904, Mill Valley's Outdoor Art Club had a small library for townspeople at its Clubhouse and there were other "reading rooms" in town. In 1908, Mill Valley citizens adopted Ordinance 138 to provide their community with a true Library, and the Library Board of Trustees was appointed. In 1909, the Board found temporary housing for the Library in the Assembly Room of Fireman's Hall and the site for a new Library was selected at 52 Lovell Avenue.

Fact #96: In October 1970, the Mill Valley Public Library accepted part of an exhibit of student protest art that had been turned down by the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival as being too political. The collection of more than 1000 works, called "peace and social protest art," was created by students throughout the country, mostly during the period of protest following the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. The art was also displayed in Berkeley, New York, and The Hague. A committee member of the Mill Valley Arts Festival said the protest art might make people feel uncomfortable. Ann O'Hanlon, on the Mill Valley Arts Commission, replied, "Maybe some people need to be made uncomfortable." The protest art was on exhibit in the Library for seven days, including the weekend of the Fall Arts Festival.

Fact #94: In addition to the monthly art exhibits in the downstairs hallway, the Library has four noteworthy pieces of art on permanent display. Ray Strong's oil painting "Fog over the Golden Gate, from Tamalpais," a generous gift from his daughter, hangs over the fireplace. Emmy Lou Packard's linocut "Logging in Mendocino, 1870" hangs at the top of the stairs down to the Fiction Room. Peter Traphagan's etched brass plate for the Library is just inside the front entryway, on the right. And last but not least, Clement Hurd's charming print of owls in a tree hangs near the elevator in the Children's Room.

Fact #95: The logo for the Mill Valley Library Foundation was designed by award-winning Northern California graphic artist Michael Schwab. The logo features the profiles of a man and a woman reading, sitting back to back. Among Schwab's other works are the logos for the National Parks in this area, including Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods.

The four dormer windows "add great interest to the facade," windows in the reading room "afford astonishing triangular glimpses of sky and treetops," and the southeast bay window "is truly a window of noble proportions." The view of Mt. Fact #90: The Peter Dreyfus Garden is named for the man who was described as "The Best Friend" of the Friends of the Mill Valley Public Library. Peter Dreyfus, who died in 1996, began donating his time to the Library after retirement, and was a "daily fixture" at the library for at least 14 years. The Garden is located at the southeast end of the Library, outside the book sale room. The hand-carved sign for the Garden was made by Mill Valley artist Don Churchfield, whose carved signs can also be seen at the Mill Valley Market, Mill Valley Florist, and the Episcopal Church of Our Savior.

Fact #88: In 1988 and 1989, the Friends of the Library held a successful fund raising drive to raise $6000 for the purchase of the 20-cassette Classic Video Collection from PBS. The MacArthur Foundation donated 90% of the total cost of the series to all libraries that could raise the remaining 10%. The series included such classics as The Ascent of Man, I Claudius, and The Story of English. The FOL's campaign spurred the donation of two other video series: Smith & Hawken donated Paul Hawken's 10-part series "Growing a Business"; and the Sierra Club donated their 10-part series on wildlife.

Fact #89: October 1926 was one of the busiest months to date in the history of the Mill Valley Public Library. This was thought to be due to the new requirement in Mill Valley public schools that all students must read one book from the Library and review it before they could be promoted to the next grade.
