How it Works

To Borrow, Grow, and Share Seeds:

  1. Stop by the Library and check out the offerings in our SeedSmart Library, or browse our collection in the MARINet catalog.

  2. Find the seed packets you want and bring them to the circulation desk. You can check out up to 6 packets! The color of the dots on each packet indicate how easy it is to save that particular plant– green is easy, yellow is intermediate, and red is difficult.

  3. Plant your seeds! We’ve provided basic growing instructions on each of the seed packets, but you can also view the instructions online  via our MARINet catalog–each plant listed in our library catalog will display instructions for growing and seed-saving. For further help, consult our resources page. We’ve got a number of books in our SeedSmart Library that you can check out, too!

  4. Enjoy your plants! Breathe in that deep sense of success–you did it!

  5. Harvest your seeds. Follow the directions from our catalog or handouts and return dried seeds from a healthy plant to the Reference Desk so we can pass them along to the next gardener! Fill out a donation form and include as much information as possible so the next person knows what they’re getting.
